Artist of the Month – Yayoi Kusama

By All School News

The Artist of the Month for April 2023 at Chiswick & Bedford Park Preparatory School is Yayoi Kusama.

Sometimes referred to as the princess of polka dots’, Kusama was born in Japan in 1929 and began painting as a child. Attending Kyoto City Specialist School of Arts in 1948 she studied the ancient practise of Nihonga, a thousand year old traditional Japanese method of painting.

After contacting a previous CBPPS Artist of the Month, Georgia O’Keeffe, she moved to America in 1957 where she continued to develop and evolve her own unique style of art.

Kusama’s vibrant works of art include paintings, sculptures, installations and performances, and her Infinity Mirrored Room – Filled with the Brilliance of Life is currently available to view at the Tate Modern in London until September 2023.

Science Week 2023

By All School News

On Monday 13th March, Science Week 2023 kicked off with a brilliant day of workshops and talks thanks to Inventors and Makers. The classes learnt about a variety of scientific subjects such as binary code and connections (this year’s Science Week theme).

We were visited by Mr Littledale, Head of STEM at Downe House, who hosted a workshop with Years 5 & 6 on recycling and sustainability, and we enjoyed talks throughout the week from guest parent speakers who gave us an insight into the world of science through their work.

The whole school took part in a penny experiment and poster competition with the winners to be announced soon!

The week ended with a fantastic assembly by Year 2, who wowed us with their scientific songs and did an excellent job learning their lines.

Thank you to all that visited and took part in making this year’s Science Week such a big success!
