The Artist of the Month for April 2023 at Chiswick & Bedford Park Preparatory School is Yayoi Kusama.
Sometimes referred to as ‘the princess of polka dots’, Kusama was born in Japan in 1929 and began painting as a child. Attending Kyoto City Specialist School of Arts in 1948 she studied the ancient practise of Nihonga, a thousand year old traditional Japanese method of painting.
After contacting a previous CBPPS Artist of the Month, Georgia O’Keeffe, she moved to America in 1957 where she continued to develop and evolve her own unique style of art.
Kusama’s vibrant works of art include paintings, sculptures, installations and performances, and her Infinity Mirrored Room – Filled with the Brilliance of Life is currently available to view at the Tate Modern in London until September 2023.
